About Healthwatch

Healthwatch is a free and confidential health checks program offered to emergency service volunteers that currently operates within CFA and SES in Victoria.

The health checks are conducted at CFA brigades and SES units and include measures of height, weight and waist circumferences, resting blood pressure and a finger prick blood testing looking at fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol. HDL, LDL and triglycerides.

From their participants complete an online diet and lifestyle questionnaire, the results from which are integrated with medical results and used to produce a cardiovascular risk assessment report outlining their relative and absolute risk of cardiovascular disease. Trained health professionals then explain the results from the report to individuals in an easy to understand manner, focusing on the diet and lifestyle modification strategies that could be implemented to help that individual reduce their risk.

The risk assessment tool used within the Healthwatch program (Heart Track Online) is derived from the Baker IDI's Heart Risk Evaluation Program and maintained by Public Health Management.

As an addition to the health checks program brigades and units are encouraged to organise a healthy meal to share following on from the health checks session, creating a friendly and casual environment where members may choose to discuss potential strategies to improve their collective health.
