Stretching is not just important before and after exercise, but should be a part of your daily routine. Here is how and why!

Benefits of Stretching                                                                                                                          Try these easy stretches that can be done anywhere!

  • Improves muscle and joint flexibility
  • Improves balance and strength
  • Improves circulations and blood flow
  • Helps improve sleep quality and quantity- making you less tired!
  • Helps to wake up your body and mind
  • Warms your body up before exercise; relaxes your body after exercise
  • Reduces your chances of injury, muscle tension and soreness
  • Reduces your risk of developing musculoskeletal disorders (the most common work-related disorder!)
  • Reduces PMS symptoms (women)

 

Tips for safe stretching

  • Aim to stretch for 10 minutes every day to gain the benefits
  • Stretch in the morning to wake your body and mind
  • Give yourself a break from sitting and/ or computer time by stretching for 5 minutes
  • Hold each stretch for 15 - 30 seconds and complete the stretch on both sides of the body
  • If you are recovering from injury, be cautious about your stretching- see your GP/ physio
  • Stretching may cause some discomfort, but stop if you experience any sharp/ shooting pain
  • Include stretching in your warm-up and cool-down activities when exercising
  • Add variety to your routine by attending a yoga or Pilates class, or find online videos
